Introduction
Welcome to Library Practice.* As a Library Practice student, you will become an "employee" of the Monroe library. In the library you will do real and meaningful work that benefits the entire school while you learn real-life skills that will help you in the outside world. Being a Library Practice student is a position requiring great responsibility and commitment on your part. It is my responsibility to train and supervise you so that you will be able to be helpful to the library's patrons, both student and faculty.
YOU ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR TEAM. I COULD NOT RUN THE LIBRARY WITHOUT YOU!
The training is comprised of six units. To help you practice the skills you are learning you will be choosing a theme, or research topic. The topic should be something you are interested in, but relevant to what high school students study. The results of your work will be posted on the library’s website, as your work will be helpful to others in finding valuable information on a variety of topics. Following is a brief description of each unit:

The training is comprised of six units. To help you practice the skills you are learning you will be choosing a theme, or research topic. The topic should be something you are interested in, but relevant to what high school students study. The results of your work will be posted on the library’s website, as your work will be helpful to others in finding valuable information on a variety of topics. Following is a brief description of each unit:
- Unit 1: Basic Library Skills: Unit One is library “boot camp” where you will learn how the library is organized and library terminology. You will be trained to shelve books, maintain the library, process books, circulate books, and provide outstanding service to our patrons. You will choose your research topic which will be used in all the following units.
- Unit 2: Library Catalog: In Unit Two you will learn how to use the online library catalog so you can assist our patrons when they need help, culminating with scenarios where I will be the patron, and you will assist me in the use of the catalog. You will use the library catalog to create a comprehensive list of books that are excellent sources of information on your research topic.
- Unit 3: Reference Materials: In Unit Three you will explore the reference section of the library so you can be familiar with the kinds of resources located there and how to quickly access the information located in them. You will know when and how to direct our patrons to the reference section when appropriate. You will create a comprehensive list of articles from reference books that provide excellent information on your topic.
- Unit 4: Databases and E-Books: In Unit Four you will explore both district-provided databases and school-provided e-books. You will be able to explain what each is and how they are similar/different. You will be able to show patrons how to access and search these online resources. You will create a comprehensive list of articles from databases and e-books providing information on your topic.
- Unit 5: The Internet: In Unit Five you will learn how to use an Internet search engine, such as Google, to efficiently search the web for information. You will then learn how to evaluate the results so you are using quality/reliable information. You will create a comprehensive list of web sites providing quality information on your topic.
- Unit 6: Library Promotion: In Unit Six, as a culminating activity, you will “promote” the resources you have collected on your topic by creating a library display. Your resources will also be promoted on our library’s website.
